Đầu tư vào Joby Aviation của Santa Cruz, California, có thể thấy nhà sản xuất này muốn mở rộng quy mô vào lĩnh vực mới vì đây là lĩnh vực phát triển nhanh chóng, chủ tịch Akio Toyoda nhấn mạnh chuyển đổi công ty từ sản xuẩt ô tô sang công ty vận tải.

Thành lập năm 2009, Joby Aviation đang phát triển máy bay điện vận chuyển 4 hành khách có thể lên thẳng giống như trực thăng thông qua nhiều bộ máy robot được lắp đặt.
Công ty tạo ra viễn tưởng dịch vụ thương mại hàng không hơn là bán hàng cho cá nhân vì rất khó có nhiều phi công cá nhân.
Toyota nói đó là một lĩnh vực sản xuất kỳ vọng, chất lượng giảm tải chi phí để phát triển và sản xuất.
Phó giám đốc điều hành Toyota, Shigeki Tomoyama, sẽ tham gia dự án Joby, đóng vai trò trò quan trọng tạo ra chiến lược trực tiếp.
Joby đã là đối tác của Uber vận tải taxi thương mại trong thành thị.
Toyota đã có lợi nhuận đầu tư vào hãng xe bay khác, đầu tư vào dự án Japanese SkyDrive ý định phát triển xe bay nhỏ nhất thế giới.
Đó là phân khúc khác, Toyota cho biết tại triễn lãm Consumer Electronics Show ở Las Vegas tháng này có kế hoạch tạo ra “thành phố vải sợi” đặt tại núi Phú Sĩ, sử dụng tế báo năng lượng công nghệ Hydro mở đường cho lĩnh vực xe hơi cũng như nhà ở thông minh.

Toyota buying into flying car firm Joby
Japanese car giant Toyota said it is investing nearly $400 million in a company working on commercializing electric flying cars for “fast, quiet and affordable air transportation services.”
The investment in Joby Aviation of Santa Cruz, California, comes as the automaker looks to expand into new sectors as the industry rapidly transforms, with president Akio Toyoda pledging to move the firm “from a car manufacturer to a mobility company.”
“Air transportation has been a long-term goal for Toyota, and while we continue our work in the automobile business, this agreement sets our sights to the sky,” Toyoda said in a statement announcing the investment.
“Through this new and exciting endeavor, we hope to deliver freedom of movement and enjoyment to customers everywhere, on land, and now, in the sky.”
Founded in 2009, Joby Aviation is developing a four-passenger electric aircraft that takes off and lands vertically, like a helicopter, though it has multiple rotors.
The firm envisions the aircraft as a mode of commercial transport, rather than for sale to individuals, with its pilots ferrying commuters around.
Toyota said it would also offer its “expertise in manufacturing, quality and cost controls for the development and production” of Joby’s aircraft.
One of Toyota’s executive vice presidents, Shigeki Tomoyama, will join Joby’s board, playing an “active role in setting strategic direction,” Toyota said.
Joby already has a partnership with ride-sharing firm Uber to develop an “urban air taxi service.”
Toyota has ventured into the flying vehicle field elsewhere, investing in the Japanese SkyDrive project to develop what is intended to be the world’s smallest flying car.
It has also branched out into other sectors, announcing at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this month its plans for a “woven city” at the base of Mount Fuji that would be powered by hydrogen fuel cells and include roads for autonomous vehicles as well as smart homes.
